Please donate today to give brave Mags life-changing treatment

When an animal arrives in our care at Raystede, we do everything we can to ensure they are healthy, comfortable and given the best possible chance of leading a good life. Some animals may need more treatment than others. Some may need our help urgently.

Take Mags. From the moment he arrived it was evident that he was experiencing a huge amount of pain and needed immediate care and treatment. Our Equine Manager, Alice Campion, said:

It was clear by the way he was walking that Mags had chronic pain in all four of his feet and that he had not seen a farrier for some time. This will not be a quick fix.

Mags needs your help

Mags has been with us for just a few weeks, but in that time we have uncovered a multitude of health issues that are contributing to his ongoing suffering and preventing Mags from having a good quality of life.

Mags has chronic laminitis – inflammation and damage to the tissue of his hooves – which is affecting his ability to walk. It means he won’t walk, pain free, until he’s recovered, which could be some time.

Mags is also suffering with:

  • Conjunctivitis in both eyes – which are sore and uncomfortable
  • Equine Metabolic Syndrome (EMS) which means he cannot regulate his blood insulin levels and this, untreated, can affect his liver
  • Ulcers on both cheeks, due to lack of dental care – making eating painful
  • Damaged hooves – contributing to the pain in his feet
  • Lice
  • Worms
  • A concerning lump which we are monitoring for further changes before further investigation.

It’s incredibly sad that Mags has so many health issues working against him. He’s going to need a lot of treatment and support if he is ever to make a full recovery.

Mags’ treatment plan

Because of the complexity of Mags’s health issues, we will need to keep him under close observation for some time. He needs urgent treatment to help alleviate his chronic laminitis and conjunctivitis, but he will also need ongoing therapy to get him back on his feet again.

Mags will need:

  • Several x-rays to assess his condition and ascertain how he is responding to treatment
  • Extensive physiotherapy to alleviate the pain and discomfort caused by chronic laminitis
  • A course of worming treatment
  • Ongoing treatment for lice
  • Ongoing treatment for EMS – including a special diet
  • Several visits from a farrier
  • A visit from a dentist and possible dental treatment
  • Lots of love, care and support to recover from his ordeal
  • Ongoing pain relief

Once we have treated Mags fully, we can then start to rehabilitate him so that he can go into one of the fields at Raystede, or to a new home. Anything you donate today will help fund his expert care.

Meet Mags’s friends Delphi and Saviour

Mags is not alone. We have recently welcomed his companions, Delphi and Saviour, who also arrived with complex health issues requiring immediate care. Delphi, an older mare, has worn teeth that put her at risk of choking, so she needs a special diet of mashed meals. She also suffers from COPD, a respiratory condition that requires medication to improve her breathing. Saviour has a systolic heart murmur, which means he needs a calm and quiet life where he is able to rest.

Blood tests for Delphi and Saviour have revealed dehydration, a high level of parasites and liver disease, all of which require ongoing treatment. Both are also dealing with photosensitivity, a symptom of liver disease, and must wear UV-protected rugs to prevent their skin from blistering.

These gentle animals need our help to ensure they receive the care they deserve.

Mags is a brave little fighter.

Our Equine Staff say that he is stoic, accepting his medicines obediently. However, his sad brown eyes speak volumes about the pain and discomfort he is feeling underneath.

No animal deserves to suffer. Please help to support Mags’s immediate and ongoing treatment by making an urgent donation today, so he can begin to lead a happy, healthy and natural pony life.

Thank you on behalf of Mags, our Equine Team and all our staff and volunteers here at Raystede!
