Lord-Lieutenant of East Sussex visits Raystede projects old and new

Our Patron-in-Chief, The Lord-Lieutenant of East Sussex spent the day with us, meeting staff and volunteers.

The Lord-Lieutenant of East Sussex, Mr Andrew Blackman, recently visited Peaceways Pet Crematorium.

In his capacity as the charity’s Patron-in-Chief, Mr Blackman toured the peaceful chapel, grounds and rose garden of remembrance at Peaceways, which has been providing a caring and compassionate service for pets and their bereaved owners for nearly 60 years. Peaceways was established by Raystede’s Founder, Miss Raymonde-Hawkins in 1964 and many generations of pets are fondly remembered there.

Mr Blackman went on to visit our newest initiative, Project Terrapin, a unique sanctuary being created to care for injured and abandoned terrapins.

Terrapins are often bought as pets as they are small and relatively cheap. Many owners do not realise that terrapins grow into very large adults - as much as 25cms long or the size of a dinner plate! They need a lot of space and specialist care. Sadly, when they reach maturity, they are often dumped because they are difficult to rehome and many of them perish. Our new terrapin sanctuary is currently under construction and the Lord-Lieutenant visited the site to see progress on the intake and isolation unit, training pond, main pond, basking beach and educational facility.

The Lord-Lieutenant first visited Raystede in May 2022 to celebrate Her late Majesty The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee and the charity’s own 70th anniversary.

During his first visit, he planted an English Oak tree as part of the celebrations and of the Queen’s Green Canopy – a scheme to plant a million trees in a living and lasting legacy to Her Majesty. During this most recent visit, The Lord-Lieutenant took the opportunity to view the tree, which is under the care of Sue Goddard from the our Estates Team.

His visit finished with a delve into the Aladdin’s cave of Raystede’s online shop

There Mr. Blackman met Manager, Angela, and volunteer, Fran, who list hundreds of items every month for online auctions to raise vital funds. Our eBay shop is a treasure trove of curated pre-loved items, that much like our charity shops, has many hidden gems.
