Pet Fostering at the Raystede Centre for Animal Welfare

In April 2008 the Raystede Centre as part of the “Links Group” set up a pet fostering service for women and families fleeing domestic violence.
The service is available to any woman/family living in Kent or Sussex that is fleeing domestic violence.
All pets are placed in a volunteer foster carer’s home with the aim that they will return to their owner, once they are settled.
Pets in homes where there is domestic violence are often targets of abuse and in a recent study it was shown that these pets are often threatened, injured or killed by their partners.
Information suggests that one of the reasons women are not leaving their abusive partners and going into refuge is the fear of leaving their beloved family pet behind.
Every year thousands of families, women and children are affected by domestic abuse. This abuse can come in many forms; physical, emotional, financial or sexual.
On average one in four women will experience domestic violence in their lifetime and in the UK two women a week are killed by partners or ex-partners.
