Raystede Equines

A retirement haven

The equine section at Raystede cares for 15+ horses and ponies. We also look after donkeys, goats and sheep. Most of the equines at Raystede are old or have some form of injury or illness and are here to spend the rest of their days receiving the best possible care and attention. All our equines live outside all year round to enable them to live as natural a lifestyle as possible.

Here are pictures of some of our retired residents - click to enlarge

Morgan
Morgan has retired with us recently due to leg problems, which makes him un-rideable. He has a lovely nature, and is enjoying his retirement.
Connie
Connie has had some bad experiences, one of which was being hit round the head, which has caused trust issues. She has not been here long, but we are beginning the long road of mutual trust. Our relaxed, no rush way makes for happy animals.
Sparky & Remy
Sparky (left) and Remy (right) are stunning ponies. When they came in they had not had much done with them. They were scared of grooming and picking out their feet. With time they have settled in well. Remy has an ability to know when an electric fence is not working and climbs through it leaving the fence intact. We used to often find him on the other side - after all, the grass is always greener..
Purdie
Purdie is a Flabella X miniature and was born deformed with a clubfoot. She spent the first six years of her life in a back garden. Despite her size, she is a little madam and easily holds her own.

Saul
Saul has been completely blind since the age of 18 months, but copes very well in the herd by listening and following. His mouth acts as his eyes and if we are not careful we get the odd nip or two. His other senses are so heightened that you could possibly be mistaken and think he can see.
Seamus
Seamus came to Raystede as a stallion and with the character of a wild pony. You would not believe that now, as he is such a softie! He is best friends with Purdie.
Cloud
Cloud - when she came in she had some trust issues but the natural, quiet way we look after the equines soon brought her round.
Albert
Albert is an ex-driving pony full of character. He is also very intelligent and knows every trick in the book.

Brandy
Brandy is an old boy who has been at Raystede for quite a few years. He likes the quiet life with plenty of love, oh, and a big bucket of food!
Sam
Sam is one of the longest residents. He likes a quiet life, which is why he is happiest with the larger horses or donkeys as they leave him in peace, unlike the ponies which are too lively for him.
Master Boffin
Master Boffin arrived February 2009. He is a 26 year old Bay gelding. He has had a long loving home prior to coming to us; his owner knew he needed friends, as a horse on their own is not natural. He is a well natured boy. Also, he has cataracts in both eyes so he may lose his sight, but is settling in with new horse friends who will show him the way if his sight deterioriates that much.
Cascade
Cascade, or Cassie to her friends, is a 25 year old Arab mare, who arrived February 2009. She came from a loving home, but was living on her own. She loves loads of attention, until it's time to put on her rug, that's when she threatens to bite you! Otherwise, she is very sweet natured.

Danny
Danny is a very quiet little pony who just wants to plod about and hang out with his friend, Blue.
Cherry
Cherry is a very cheeky little mare. She is not scared or bothered by much and likes nothing more than to pick a scrap or two with the others in the herd when coming in for a groom. Because of this she usually gets tied up first.
Blue
Blue was a very nervous chap and it used to take a while to catch him. With time however, his sweet character has come out.

It costs, for each horse, pony or donkey:

  • £50-100 for a donkey rug (unlike ponies, donkeys are not waterproof).
  • £10-50 per week for feed and hay.
  • £3 per week for straw for their shelters.
  • £20-60 every 6-8 weeks for feet trimming and shoeing.
  • £10 twice a year for worming.
  • £40 twice a year for dental work.

Open 10am to 4pm daily.
